My name is Jenna Webb and I'm the vaccine preventable disease surveillance epidemiologist for the Florida Department of Health at the state level.
Florida's public health system is set up a little different than other states. We have a state level health department then each county has a local health department. So in total we have 67 local health departments and one state health department.

South Carolina has a centralized system and there is one State Health Department that is over the 4 regional health departments and the county level health departments.

I work at the Alaska DHSS as an epidemiology specialist in chronic disease prevention. Before that I was an ORISE fellow at CDC in the poxvirus and rabies branch.
I think Alaska only has one local health department in the largest city (Anchorage), and the other big player is the Alaska native tribal health consortium.

I work at San Mateo County (San Mateo, CA) and am an epi PhD student at UC Berkeley. Before returning to grad school, I supported the Communicable Disease and Tuberculosis Control Units at San Mateo County-- now I get roped into whatever people need help with, a small price to pay to have access to data for my dissertation! My research area of interest is how social factors intersect with infectious diseases, particularly reportable diseases. I am focusing on chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis for my dissertation.
California has 58 counties, each with their own local health departments, and 3 city health departments (Berkeley, Long Beach, and Pasadena). Thank you to our CDPH colleagues for dealing with 61 unique local health departments!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for getting this thread started Jenna.
I work at the Washington State Department of Health. I've been there for 6 months working as an epidemiologist with the Non-healthcare Congregate Settings COVID-19 Outbreak team. We support local health departments with large workplace outbreaks and conduct statewide surveillance for these settings. Currently, I'm leading the implementation of a study that looks at transmission of COVID-19 within schools. On the side and more generally, I am interested in infectious diseases and injury epi.
Similar to California, we 35 local health jurisdictions and a state health department that provides guidance and support to them.
P.S. I grew up in Florida so I'm glad to see some Florida public health folks!

Thank you for starting this conversation. My name is Laura Henderson and I am a first year MPH student at George Mason University in Virginia. Prior to starting my program, I worked as a surgical coordinator in a cardiothoracic surgery practice and currently work as an analyst for an employee benefits consulting company. I am returning to school to change my career and am excited for the networking opportunities that the CSTE Mentorship Program provides. I am new to the public health/epi field and learning about everyone's backgrounds and current positions has been very helpful in introducing new career paths to me. I am currently interested in infectious diseases.
My name is Haley Kehus and I am the epidemiologist for Macomb County Health Department located in Metro Detroit in Michigan. I earned my MPH in epidemiology from Emory University in 2019 and focused my studies on infectious diseases, specifically respiratory diseases. I would love to hear from those of you who are pursuing a doctorate or are considering it. I hope to pursue my PhD in epidemiology in the next few years so any advice is welcome! Ideally, I would like to stay in Michigan and go to University of Michigan (where I earned my bachelor's in neuroscience in 2015).
My name is Evelyn Zavala. I will be graduating from George Mason University in Virginia this May. I currently work as a case interviewer for the Fairfax County Health Department Covid-19 response. I am also a science intern for the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice, working closely on the Unequal Response Unequal Protection campaign. I am really interested in health inequities, mental health, minority health, and substance use. I am looking to transition into a permanent position this fall and possibly relocating to Atlanta, GA. I am really enjoying seeing where everyone works and is located!

I'm a first-year MPH student in the 2-year Epidemiology/Biostatistics program at UC Berkeley. Prior to starting my MPH I did global health work for a year in Guatemala, and worked for 3 years as a Clinical Research Coordinator in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Stanford. Since most of my experience is in the academic setting, I'm enjoying this opportunity to connect with you all who have experience with state and local health departments. I'm interested in Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health, and in particular reproductive health and adolescent health.
I am Research Data Analyst for Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute (MAPRI) which is the research core of Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, PC (MAPMG) and Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States.
I have gotten my MPH in Biostatistics and Epidemiology in 2018 at University of Sourthern California and I got my BS in Biological Sciences with focus on Immunology and Virology at the University of California, Irvine. I have previously worked as Research specialist at Emory University doing lab work.
My work and interest are data analysis in death records, virtual care, and also population health using medical records.
