The CSTE Early Career Professionals subcommittee is hosting a webinar on Friday, May 6th from 2 - 3 PM EST entitled "Advancing through a Career in Epidemiology". The webinar will feature a panel of professionals who can speak to their experiences moving through their careers in public health and epidemiology (fellow to full-time epidemiologist, mid-level to senior, managerial roles, etc.) The panelists will share their experiences and answer any questions during an open Q&A session for attendees. The intended audience for the webinar includes students and early and mid-career professionals. Registration is required for this webinar.

Kim Gaetz, MSPH, PhD – Dr. Kim Gaetz is the epidemiology supervisor of the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch of the North Carolina Division of Public Health. She leads a team of chemical, occupational, and climate epidemiologists and manages data for the NC Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance program. She is also currently the interim principal investigator on the NIOSH State Occupational Health Surveillance Program and Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity grant to improve the collection of Industry and Occupation data in COVID-19 case investigations. She also manages the NC Environmental Health Data Dashboard project, an initiative to create environmental health data visualizations that are accessible to the public, inform public health decisions to increase health equity, and support community resilience and environmental justice initiatives throughout the state. Dr. Gaetz earned her undergraduate degree in Biology at UNC-Asheville. She earned masters’ and doctorate degrees in Epidemiology from UNC-Chapel Hill and was principal investigator of the “Free to Breathe, Free to Teach” study of teachers’ respiratory health and indoor air quality.
 
 Nicole Eiden, MSc –Nicole Eiden has over 25 years of federal and state agency experience spanning many topical areas, including spatial database design and management, field data collection, remote sensing, modeling and geospatial analysis. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Science with a minor in Conservation Biology and her Master of Science in Geospatial Analysis & Remote Sensing, both from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Up until 2019, Mrs. Eiden applied GIS to fisheries and wildlife management activities, including environmental compliance, endangered species recovery, aquatic and terrestrial vegetation inventories, predictive modeling, sportfish and game management, and developing public-facing web applications to promote outdoor recreation. In 2019, Mrs. Eiden began a career in public health, and building on previous experiences, developed several high profile applications (internal and external) to support the COVID-19 emergency response. She works with programs across ADHS to geo-enable their activities, and is integrating GIS into planning, data analysis and modeling, and low/no code web application development for public outreach.
 
 Catherine Brown, DVM, MSc, MPH –Dr. Catherine (Katie) Brown is the State Epidemiologist and State Public Health Veterinarian at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health; she has been with the Department since 2006.  She received her DVM from the University of Minnesota and completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship. She holds a Master of Science in Wild Animal Health from the University of London, Royal Veterinary College and a Master of Public Health from Boston University. Following 8 years of clinical practice in wildlife medicine, she was awarded a CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship. As the State Epidemiologist, she is responsible for ensuring appropriate surveillance for over 90 reportable infectious diseases as well as overseeing surveillance data analysis and dissemination. As a veterinarian, she is most deeply involved with the reportable zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. Katie is currently serving as the Infectious Disease Steering Committee chair for CSTE and is very proud of a 2010 Humane Endeavors award from the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association and a 2013 Commonwealth of Massachusetts Workforce Mentoring award.
 
 Joli Weiss, MS, PhD –Dr. Joli Weiss received her MS in Rehabilitation Counseling and her PhD in Epidemiology and Community Health from the University at Buffalo. She originally started her epidemiology career in cancer epidemiology, specializing in leukemia and male breast cancer. However, her interest in infectious diseases led her to take a job in applied public health. She has been working at the Arizona Department of Health Services for the past 15 years. First as a foodborne disease epidemiologist, then as the outbreak response coordinator, and now as the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Program Manager where she oversees the food and waterborne disease program and wastewater surveillance program for the Office of Infectious Disease Services.
