Interested in a certification?

I completed the CPH certification in 2020 to complete part of my MPH program through U of Minnesota (though I don't think they allow this anymore). Although I felt like studying for the exam was  good review of coursework I think having this certification is overshadowed by having my MPH. Since the certification is so broad (just public health in general, not focused) I don't feel like it shows any extra abilities compared to having my degree. But that's just my thoughts on how it's benefited me. 

It is not particularly hard to maintain the CE requirements because my current job has allowed me to attend enough conferences or meetings. Plus there are online options. But it sometimes feels like a nuisance to maintain when I work in public health every day.

Completing the CPH certification is a personal choice in my opinion. I was offered it during my MPH when it was still fairly new in 2012, but given my unique focus on veterinary public health (and now genomics), I chose not to pursue it. It was another exam in my mind that just added letters next to your name. Jobs typically DO NOT require the certification (although it may be favorable if you have it). I agree with Jesse that the exam is super broad (think about the GRE's) and does not truly showcase your skills and expertise in a particular area. 

Similar to Hayley, I had no interest in taking yet another exam after completing my MPH.  But as an employer, I do look for the CPH when reviewing CVs from job applicants who graduated from less established schools (e.g., online for-profit).  I'll quickly add that at this point I have served as an onsite preceptor for several students working on their applied practice experience requirement from a few of those schools, and so far they've all been on par with students from more established CEPH-accredited schools whom I've mentored.  Still, it's reassuring to see the CPH listed for those graduates.
