Descriptive Webinar Title: Data Standards and Interoperability
Overview: Data standards are agreed-upon methods for connecting systems together. Standards may pertain to security, data transport, data format or structure, or the meanings of codes or terms, and are frequently determined by Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). Public health standards such as Health Level 7 (HL7), Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC), and Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED), exist to facilitate and standardize the exchange of information between systems. Many systems still operate in silos, preventing learning across organizations and not optimizing the use of existing resources.
This session will cover the importance of data standards and interoperability to public health.
Use Cases: Electronic Lab Reporting (ELR), Syndromic surveillance, electronic case reporting (eCR)
Learning Objectives: At the end of this webinar the participants will be able to:
1. Examine why vocabulary & exchange standards are important to public health projects
2. Examine how different standards are utilized to conduct reporting and mapping for public health surveillance
