AZ BioSense Community of Practice

The mission of the Arizona BioSense Workgroup is to work collaboratively as partners to build capacity and quality of BioSense syndromic surveillance in Arizona. Our vision is to improve population health and emergency response through the use of timely and effective syndromic surveillance. This space is a platform for our members to continue discussions and share cross-role topics and questions from providing the data to using syndromic data (clinician/IT/public health).

ESSENCE Training Videos from JHUAPL

Wayne Loschen is a Software Engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), the group that created ESSENCE.  He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and an M.S. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.  He is the technical lead for ESSENCE.

The videos shared here are a little outdated (from 2016 and 2017) but are still very useful and relevant for new ESSENCE users.

Video 1: This presentation is from 2016 and is on how to build ad-hoc queries in ESSENCE.  In addition to teaching the basic mechanics of building queries, the presentation will explore advanced techniques for building complex queries to find specific case definitions in the data.
