AZ BioSense Community of Practice

The mission of the Arizona BioSense Workgroup is to work collaboratively as partners to build capacity and quality of BioSense syndromic surveillance in Arizona. Our vision is to improve population health and emergency response through the use of timely and effective syndromic surveillance. This space is a platform for our members to continue discussions and share cross-role topics and questions from providing the data to using syndromic data (clinician/IT/public health).

Syndrome Definition Evaluation

Background:

This tool was created by Sara Chronister with the Maricopa Department of Public Health. The purpose of this tool is to allow ESSENCE users to evaluate the data details (line level) results of one, two, or three syndrome definitions at a time. This project produces several important outputs:

  • An HTML file that can be shared with others and opened using either Chrome or Firefox browsers. This document contains no identifiable data, only aggregate results, for security purposes.
  • A csv file for each combination of definitions possible containing a subset of variables important in the manual review process. These files do contain identifiable information and should be handled accordingly.
  • A csv file containing details about the definition elements (codes and terms) that can be used to evaluate the performance of individual elements in query results. These files do contain identifiable information and should be handled accordingly.
