Feedback Wanted: Potential Syndromic Surveillance Data Sources

In Slack today there was a post asking for feedback about different data sources to further the future of syndromic surveillance. If you have anything to share on this topic, please comment to this post.
As many of you know, CSTE, in collaboration with CDC NSSP, is working with Leslie Fierro and Amy Laurent (Fierro Consulting, Inc.) to gather, characterize, prioritize, and summarize data from members of the syndromic surveillance community to evaluate which of several potential data sources may have the most value for onboarding into the NSSP BioSense Platform. To accomplish this, Leslie and Amy have reviewed relevant literature, conducted key informant interviews with NSSP and STLT colleagues, and facilitated in-depth group discussions over the past few months.
As part of these initial data collection efforts and reflection sessions, there are some data sources/elements that have come up in passing and would be helpful to have additional insights about. These include:

- Birth defects registry
- Blood lead/e-case reports/reportable conditions
- Cancer registry
- Climate data
- School absenteeism
- Water quality
- Wastewater monitoring for virus
- Ports of entry/border health facilities
- BRFSS
- Correctional facilities
- Shelters
- Community health centers
In an effort to better understand the findings to date, Fierro Consulting Inc. and CSTE would like to invite Slack participants to share their experiences with these datasets. Some questions to consider in reflecting on these experiences might include:
- Which of these do you feel would be valuable to onboard and why?
- If you have used these datasets…
- How did you use it and does it apply to NSSP?
- What are some of the strengths of this dataset? Limitations?
- How could it be more useful for public health action?
It is important to note that given the existing Slack guidelines, Leslie and Amy are not eligible to join and participate in the Slack discussion; thus, CSTE (myself) will share the responses with them. All identifiable information will be removed and will not be shared with the consultants.
