AZ BioSense Community of Practice

The mission of the Arizona BioSense Workgroup is to work collaboratively as partners to build capacity and quality of BioSense syndromic surveillance in Arizona. Our vision is to improve population health and emergency response through the use of timely and effective syndromic surveillance. This space is a platform for our members to continue discussions and share cross-role topics and questions from providing the data to using syndromic data (clinician/IT/public health).

Public Health Decisions/Activities

With a rise in heat related illness, the Community Mental Health and Addiction Unit Epis began looking deeper into the trends. With particular concern for individuals taking medications known to effect thermoregulation and increase risk of adverse health effects from extreme heat. We made a decision to outreach our local poison control to help draft a definition inclusive of drugs commonly associated with heat related illness (i.e. antipsychotics, antidepressants, amphetamines). We're in the early stages but we are optimistic that we will be able to pilot surveillance activities to monitor trends in behavioral health populations during local periods of extreme heat.

This is awesome to see you bring up.  Are you all using any of the CCDD categories for overdoses, overlayed with HRI and the weather data in ESSENCE?  I know I have brought some of this discussion up last year when I was looking at the stimulant CCDD category, HRI, and the weather data.  I noticed recently in the NSSP CoP Slack Channel talking about overdoses during heat season.  I look forward to hearing more about your efforts as you move forward.

Have not tried the overlay with HRI yet but will do once we have established a drug list. Need to pilot several different things internally to see what it yields first. Agree with your comment about stimulants + HRI. OD trends with stimulants appear to correlate with HRI, but I’m still not sure of a causal relationship. Lots of variables with this (i.e. fluctuations in drug supply, population size, etc). I’ll keep posting comments on this if we’re successful with any part of the project.

Your post made me think of a presentation Dr. Michelle Manos had done when when she was working at PCHD in 2016.  I am going to attach it.  Slides 11 and 12 were things we started talking about more as a group and even had some shared code and reports created based off this idea.  

You can try the overlay for any of the substance abuse CCDD categories and the weather station data as well.  Then you might be able to visualize if there were an increased visits to healthcare facilities during the hotter days.
