AZ BioSense Community of Practice

The mission of the Arizona BioSense Workgroup is to work collaboratively as partners to build capacity and quality of BioSense syndromic surveillance in Arizona. Our vision is to improve population health and emergency response through the use of timely and effective syndromic surveillance. This space is a platform for our members to continue discussions and share cross-role topics and questions from providing the data to using syndromic data (clinician/IT/public health).

Recent Updates Made in SS County Resource Files for COVID-19 in MEDSIS

Hi, team

Just a quick update on a few new columns recently made available in the SS county resource files in MEDSIS in assisting in your COVID-19 investigation efforts.

Some of these might have been communicated at our last meeting but I would like to list them in here again in case you missed it.   Please let Krystal or me know if you have any questions.
  • Current_Occupation: Part of the ongoing pilot testing with TMC & HonorHealth facilities. Limited values may be found in visits reported by these sites.
  • Employer_Name: Same as current occupation.
  • Level_of_Care: Part of the ongoing pilot testing with TMC. Limited values may be found in visits reported by TMC. This is to report the type of bed where a patient was admitted to such as sample values are Acute Medical/Surgery, Emergency, Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, …etc.
  • Overflow_Status: Same as level of care. Limited values may be found in visits reported by TMC. This is to report whether the bed where a patient was admitted to was used as an overflow bed (i.e. surge bed) or not. Sample values are Yes or No.
  • MinutesFromVisitToDischarge: This is a standard ESSENCE line list column that had not been explored in the past. Since some of you had recently expressed interests in receiving additional resources in assisting with hospitalization analysis efforts, this is now being pulled for all visits. This column is to report the patient visit duration in minutes and it was calculated using the patient admitting date/time and patient discharge date/time as the starting and ending point of the visit. If either one is missing in the system, for example, a patient has not been discharge at the time the data was pulled, there will be no value reported.
  • Hospital_Stay_in_Days: This is a modified version of MinutesFromVisitToDischarge above. It converts the value reported in MinutesFromVisitToDischarge to days since that is more of a commonly used term for inpatient hospital stay.

This is great thanks Yong! The minutes/days in hospital is incredibly valuable for monitoring hospital burden.
