This repository is intended for jurisdictions to easily share resources related to the COVID-19 outbreak response. Please refer to the CDC website for the most up-to-date official guidance for public health departments. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The audience for this Basecamp is CSTE members working at STLT health departments participating in COVID-19 response activities. Appropriate resources to upload include health department-created guidance documents, resources, or other useful tools that may be helpful to other jurisdictions during their response. Forums may be used to pose questions for discussion among STLT jurisdictions. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Prior to using this Basecamp, please ensure you review the **INSTRUCTIONS FOR BASECAMP USAGE** folder, which contains "Basecamp Repository Instructions and Rules" and "How to Change Basecamp Notification Settings." Before posting in the Forums, please review the first posting “How to Use Forums” for rules and instructions. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ IMPORTANT: This Basecamp is not housed behind the CSTE firewall and users are not monitored by the CSTE National Office, therefore CSTE does not recommend uploading any sensitive resources.

Hi all, Looking at the new CSTE COVID-19 death reporting guidance, are other jurisdictions planning on classifying COVID-19 associated deaths based on the presence of COVID-19 on the death certificate only OR will you be supplementing the death certificate criteria with some form of “case investigation determination.” We are leaning towards the former, but would like to know what others are doing. Thanks!

In Michigan, our intent is to use the vital records information and deaths identified during public health investigations.

In Minnesota, we are relying primarily on death certificates but supplement with case investigation data as available. Specifically, we request that long-term care facilities file death case report forms for residents who die within 90 days of a positive test to ensure we are accurately capturing deaths in this population. Additionally, we follow up with medical records or other information as necessary for unclear cases, such as those without a documented positive SARS-CoV-2 test or with an alternate cause of death.

In Tennessee we are relying primarily on the death certificate. As we transition toward a less time and resource intense process for classifying deaths, we are considering removing death reporting by hospitals (the other way deaths can be captured) and only relying on death certificate data.

I can add some detail. In Michigan, we a discontinuing our process of running bi-weekly comparisons of all of our reported cases against our death records from all causes and then evaluating the deaths identified in vital records that were not indicated as deceased in our disease surveillance system. This was quite a lift.
In terms of new process. This will include counting deaths that were identified during cases investigation and deaths with COVID-19 indicated as a cause on death certificate. whether or not there is an associated case that has been referred to us.
But, for us anyway, it seems important that if we are counting a COVID-19 associated death, that individual should also have record of being a case. In the case where there is no record of the individual being a case, we are also generating an associated case in our disease surveillance system and then usiing the case definition to define it.
Suspect:
•Meets supportive laboratory evidence,
OR
•Meets vital records criteria with no confirmatory or presumptive laboratory evidence for SARS-CoV-2.

I hope this makes sense.
