Building Back a Stronger Public Health Workforce Post-Pandemic
One lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic is the needed investment in an agile public health workforce. However, years of disinvestment in governmental public health led to a system that wasn’t as prepared as it could have been for a pandemic, leading to disproportionate impacts across racial and ethnic groups.

On April 7, LaQuandra Nesbitt (SHO-D.C.) joined Trust for America’s Health for a webinar celebrating the release of its new Ready or Not 2021 report. Nesbitt joined an expert panel to evaluate the nation's readiness for top disease concerns, emphasizing the need to improve our data systems to meet upcoming challenges. Earlier in the week, ASTHO’s environmental health team provided updates on new developments in vector-borne disease vaccines.

Health Policy Update
Since 2010, 180 rural hospitals have closed, and an additional 25% of rural hospitals—a total of 354 facilities—are at high risk of closure. The pandemic has only exacerbated the issue, with about half of all rural hospitals experiencing negative operating margins due to reduced outpatient revenue.
