Let me start with why I love it. When I cross something off of my to-do list<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae46e&s=e4_BmqBt6cY9GerH7whn1LV7veQGmm7nLREPMGs0MWo> or surpass a goal<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae46f&s=-UuTgtd23wbG0zo8YBfzDnGeI1pyBPnzzKFt0SbFpmU> I’ve set for myself — that sense of accomplishment feels amazing. For a moment, I’m completely fulfilled. There’s a brain chemical responsible for this (aka dopamine<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae470&s=I_CDlzb_NIq4ia7gPDLczFMZ-iznDRF0I1BT-P9vwxo),> and I’m here for it. Sometimes I even add tasks that I’ve already done to my list just so I can cross them off.
But I also think productivity is the worst.
Here’s why: For most of my life, I’ve equated my ability to be productive with my worth as a person. When I find a new creative hobby<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae471&s=kj_kb48wl7B2bAewNzrm0kNFEQi6J_HFn_E-TfzGiWo,> my first thought is usually, “Great, now how can I make money off of this?” If I’m not absolutely exhausted at the end of the day, I immediately think, “Maybe I should get in some extra work<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae472&s=s1eHOE3AeZ70NHubSeit2rxoQI9JGvWNiA5QDVW0xIs.”> This is a great way to get very burned out.
If you can relate, then like me, you can use this reminder: Productivity<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae473&s=Fh1DMjnvTwWfENiPdynhCU_GZAJ9262Du4u3Jp1xfSM> is important, but it’s not everything. Your mental health<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae474&s=MAWKLkpbQ1nbbDUT9JWoWbo5E-zt1GPzw7wJhFqh8Fc> is everything. Finding balance is everything. It’s okay to have a side hustle<https://t.a.email.hbr.org/r/?id=h732f974b%2Cd8ae466%2Cd8ae475&s=2FWGI88mKjGt6qedCJzjO0ks-1TQvogiIQpuIwfaqRs> that you’re super passionate about. And it’s also okay to play video games for five hours straight. It’s okay if you worked late yesterday and crossed 20 items off your to-do list. And it’s also okay if today, you only crossed off five.
Finding that balance is easier said than done. As always, you’re going to have to take some time to figure out what works best for you.
