Additional reporting requirements for pooled specimen for COVID-19

Hi folks,

Trying to get some insight from the public health perspective on the importance and priority of implementing additional reporting requirements for pooled specimen for COVID-19.

Currently results from pooled testing, when performed under CLIA regulation, are reported to providers and PHAs the same way as any other result related to COVID-19 testing, though either a note or a specific code might be used to identify the result as having been tested as part of a pooled sample. Pooled testing as part of surveillance - not under CLIA waiver (e.g., college dorm testing), where the results are not reportable at the individual level, are not part of the current reporting stream – is that something that needs to be considered?

Main questions for your feedback:
  1. What is the priority of getting additional data on test results from a pooled specimen?
  2. From the public health perspective, why are these data important? Do the data guide decision making at the public health level?
  3. If these data are useful, what data elements are important and why? Indication that the sample was part of a pool and the size of the pool could be a starting point, but are there other data elements that would be beneficial?
Many thanks for your feedback!
