Two issues we’ve been discussing recently in PA:

  1. Performing facility contact information.  OBX-15 and/or 23 depending on version; our field staff are more often having issues figuring out which lab within a network/conglomeration of hospitals/labs actually conducted the test.  Calls end up bouncing around trying to locate the performing facility, most often when more than one LIS is in use among the many facilities.  We were going to extract the lab name from the HL7 and add it to our PA-NEDSS reports as an ‘additional note’ because we can do it easily via Rhapsody.  But, we have no phone numbers available in the HL7 and without setting up complex and dynamic lookups, we’ll not be able to derive a matching phone number.
  2. CDC labs sending junk.  We got a set of messages earlier this week that all failed because they are not reportable to PA and we didn’t map the corresponding LOINCs.  I asked for a three year report and of the 200-ish accessions they ‘would’ have sent to PA during that time, exactly zero were reportable.  All of these are and will end up in our error queue unless we implement some business logic.  Any talk about this among states?
