The purpose of this message is to provide an update on the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) response. Please share this message with your appropriate virology testing staff.

CDC SARS-CoV-2 Variant Classifications and Definitions—UPDATED
On May 5, 2021 CDC updated the SARS-CoV-2 variant classifications and definitions. SARS-CoV-2 variants B.1.617, B.1.617.1, B.1.617.2, and B.1.617.3 are now classified as variants of interest. Refer to the CDC website for SARS-CoV-2 Variant Classification and Definitions for additional details.

CDC Shipping Alert for NS3 Specimens
National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance (NS3) submission schedules may need to be temporarily adjusted! CDC is undergoing building maintenance this week and next week that will make it difficult to receive specimens on Friday, May 7 and Friday, May 14. Public health laboratories are asked to refrain from shipping specimens for arrival on either of those dates. Please continue to ship on a weekly basis if possible, emailing sarsseqshipping@cdc.gov with the appropriate documentation. Additional shipping information is available on APHL’s website for the NS3 program.
