HL7 and Transgender patients

Hello,
I have a vague memory that there was discussion about how to handle transgender patients in HL7 coding.  Can someone point me in the right direction to find documentation of that discussion?

Amy -- I think PHINVADs has a code set for capturing this. But if you mean what HL7 segment/component, that I'll leave to someone with a better knowledge of HL7. I'm assuming somewhere in the PID segment?

I don’t know of a simple answer. The question is one with which standards development organizations have struggled for decades. In v2 it’s about the meaning of PID-8 (Administrative Gender) vs. the use of observations to represent the complexity of concepts related to biological sex and to gender.
