NHSN identifying the role of the tested person: Resident, Staff or Visitor
NHSN will send results for 3 different types of patients = people being tested: and here is how that is being identified in the messages
Residents:
PID-3.5 = PI
AOE responses: For resident of LTCF = Yes, Healthcare worker = No
Staff:
PID-3.5 = PN
AOE responses: For resident of LTCF = No, Healthcare worker = Yes
We are still trying to figure out what to do about the Visitor - that functionality will be added in the January release:
Proposed solution:
PID-3.5 = U (since there is no visitor number; we should have maybe used EI (Employee number) for staff, then we could use PN (Person number) for this, but since we already implemented the thought process is to leave that untouched
AOE responses could be anything, though more likely For resident of LTCF = No
Kay in TX wondered, why we are not using the NK1 segment for visitors and here is my explanation from from the HL7 side of things - I am posting this here so you all can correct me, if I am wrong:
In the context of HL7 the Patient is who is being tested and all the information is about (the person of the medical record in the EHR-S), so if it is the visitor, their information will be in PID; if it is the staff their information will also be in PID, that is why we are using the Patient_ID_type in PID-3.5 to differentiate these.

So I'm behind on this -- but when is the governance process going in? Then we could have looked at the standard?
Thanks so much for all of your extra additional work on this to get this so it is usable for us!
I don't think the governance process has anything to do with this particular question. And if you have other places in the standard you think we shoudl use, let's discuss,
