NHSN routing

Hi, 

I am not sure if this question has been asked before, so apologies if so. Does NHSN route messages to jurisdictions based on patient address or facility address? We are concerned that patient address might not accurately reflect where the patient is residing, and we would miss results if NHSN is routing based on this. If they are routing based on facility address, we would feel more confident that we would be receiving results for anyone seen in that facility within our jurisdiction.

Can anyone advise on this?

Hi Emily,
Are you referring to facilities like rehab centers or short-term skilled nursing where they are not residents? I don't agree that the facility address is always appropropriate unless the person actually resides there (e.g. long term care or assisted living).

Our concern was if someone is residing in a care facility, and indicates their address as being for another family member or an old address outside of our state, that those results wouldn't be routed to us if routing is based on patient address rather than facility address.

But if the facility resides in Utah and that facility performs the testing, regardless of where the patient the patient indicates their address is, that results is required to be reported to us, so we felt that routing based on facility address was safer.

We have identified that same issue with residential facilities, that they include address prior to residing at the facility. I had brought up this point when the feed was originally discussed but I don’t think there was a reply.

AIMS routes on patient state > ordering facility/provider state > testing facility state.

I believe that all residents have the facility address, but staff and in the future visitors may not. We can maybe discuss this more on the 4 PM call today, if we need to modify routing rules for NHSN and always route on testing lab state = long term care facility.
