That would be awesome. the specific questions (and this is partly because I haven't researched it yet) are: 1. our agency wants to use it for external surveys because some of our CDC programs (EIP in particular) are using it. So instead of survey monkey (which we have), then putting that into Redcap, we'd like to use Redcap directly.
2. Hosting of Redcap. I realize it is open source, but to allow the external surveys, it has to be available to the public so outside of the firewall. Does anyone have experience with the technical setup for this?

We have some experience here in NYC which might be useful to others. A few years ago, our viral hep program wanted a system to support external partner patient case management for Hep C linkage to care activities (e.g., DOHMH funded organizations with case managers who could enter data outside the health dept that would then be available to the viral hep program). In collaboration with our IT/admin folks they selected a cloud-based version of Redcap made by a small company called NPhase. The reason they chose this was that our IT dept did not want to install the free academic server-based version of Redcap because we did not support that technology stack. Redcap Cloud has been a very mixed blessing (have to pay for it, it provides inadequate training and minimal support, documentation is incomplete and outdated) and it is very difficult to share instruments and knowledge with the free Redcap public health user group which is a big limitation. We are now looking carefully at what it would take to use the academic free version but we need funding to support setup and maintenance. We are looking for that now.
We ARE using the Redcap survey currently so if there are specific questions we can answer that. Access and authentication for users had to be integrated with a citywide system here in NYC called NYCID - and there were lots of security issues that had to be dealt with - this took over a year! The same would need to be done for the server-based version. We have had a lot of calls with other jurisdictions and with CDC and the Vanderbilt folks to figure this out. Looks promising but again we need funding. Respondents to the cloud-based surveys currently do not need to go through the NYCID authentication but in the future they might have to.
