Hello Everyone,

I would like to know if we can add the following discussion item to the agenda for the next meeting:  “Use of multiple races for a given patient in the HL7 ELR standard”.  

We (SD) have noticed that for a given patient’s ELR record, we could have multiple races reported for one patient.  This practice makes it difficult to perform effective EPI analysis on the data.  I noticed that the syndromic surveillance HL7 ADT standard only allows for one race to be populated; the ELR standard allows for multiple races.  I would like to hear how other jurisdictions are handling or plan to handle the multiple race issue, specifically for EPI analysis.  In my opinion, the best way to address this issue is to modify the standard so that only one (primary) race is allowed in the ADT standard.

I would love to hear how other jurisdictions are addressing or plan to address this issue.
