DISCUSSION
  • Background on guidance document 
    • Purpose of workgroup was to create a how-to manual strictly concerning surveillance in shelters 
    • There were many discussions concerning a definition for “shelter surveillance,” but it does not appear in the document 
      • Melissa found an email from Ashley Conley, dated 6/3/2015, that shows the most recent iteration of the definition based on discussions to be: 
         Shelter surveillance is the systematic collection, management, analysis and interpretation of data of potential public health concern among the residents and staff in shelters during operations for the purpose of rapidly implementing control measures, contributing to situational awareness of the response and developing recommendations to improve future disaster planning and response. 
    • Wanted to make guidance helpful/relevant for emergency managers 
    • Remember discussing the inclusion of more graphics (e.g., reports) 
    • Lit search is approximately 2 years old 
    • Was edited by someone at CDC (though there was uncertainty if it went through editing services) 
  • Those on the call agreed that Melissa’s updated section concerning confidentiality/personal identifiable information captures what needs to be conveys and clears up the issue that was recently noted
      
IDENTIFIED NEXT STEPS
  • Within the next 2 weeks: 
    • Melissa Morrison will take a first stab at accepting tracked changes, identifying areas where new hurricane experiences can be added, identify/rectify inconsistencies within the document 
      • Melissa will send her version of the document to TX for their review 
    • Herminia Alva and Steven Pulvino will review Melissa’s version of the document and suggest edits for next call 
    • Miguel Cruz will perform at literature search for any related articles that have been published in the last 2 years (lit search was performed over 2 years ago)
