Emerging Substances

Has anyone created a syndrome/case definition for either hospital or EMS data for xylazine? We have anecdotally heard increases in this substance but are not able to use SUDORS/mortality data past 2020 at this time and do not have a centralized lab database, which might be our best sources, so we are looking at alternatives in other datasets.

Hi Christina - are you a member of the NSSP CoP Slack that the CDC runs? If not I'm happy to ask about a xylazine syndrome definition there. My intuition is that one doesn't exist at the moment for NSSP ESSENCE or EMS data (I'll also check Biospatial) and we'd likely have to rely on confirmatory testing or drug checking data in the absence of mortality data.

I'm not a member of that Slack if you don't mind inquiring. I likewise haven't seen anything built in Biospatial but they may have suggestions. I agree that lab data would be best, but we are just trying to use what we have!

Hi Christina,
To join the NSSP CoP #drug-overdose_use slack channel, you can request access here: Request to Join NSSP CoP Slack (qualtrics.com). I am not aware of any xylazine syndrome definitions, but the Slack channel is a great place to seek input from other jurisdictions.
Please let me know how else we can help!
Shannon, CDC
