ABOUT THIS COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE In partnership with the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) hosts this community of practice among OD2A-funded jurisdictions currently conducting innovative surveillance projects. SDOH data at census tract level?

Is there an agreed-upon approach to looking at SDOH in connection with overdoses? And if so, a source for census tract level data? Thanks for any info or suggestions!

Hi Ron! I don't know about an agreed-upon approach but you can use either the CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerabilility Index (CDC SVI) https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/placeandhealth/svi/index.html or the Office of Minority Health's version of the SVI. The standard CDC SVI includes download options for census tract or county, whereas the CDC/OMH version includes only county-level data to download, at least to my knowledge. Hopefully these resources help!

I plan to dig into them to figure out which will be most applicable to my situation, but figured I would first check to see what others think.

If of interest, CSTE created an opioid vulnerability toolkit that used a Composite Index Score approach--which uses methods similar to those developed for the Social Vulnerability Index.

Thanks, Cailyn! Very helpful. We previously did a spatial epidemiology approach, which we are in the process of updating. It was inspired by the Tennessee presentation back in June 2019. I think I am taking a bit of a statistical modelling approach here, so will take a closer look at all of the resources in the toolkit.

Hi - I have started working with the Community Resilience Estimates from the US Census Bureau. They come from the ACS and provide a lot of options. A slight caveat is that they are at tract level rather than zip code. But a positive is that I checked and they plan to continue updating them yearly. https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/community-resilience-estimates.html
