Training Core Component: Summer Internship Program
The Summer Internship Program was borne out of a discussion in early 2017 with mosquito control district or program directors (2017 Anastasia Mosquito Workshop) regarding their anticipated needs for more personnel to train and contribute to on-going projects (e.g. mosquito surveillance, Ae. aegypti elimination campaigns, Ae. aegypti insecticide resistance monitoring). The goal of the internships are: (i) to provide both training and practical experience in public health entomology, (ii) to provide needed support to state/county public health vector borne disease surveillance and control programs, and (iii) to educate interns about public health entomology as a career option in the hopes of interns transitioning to their site’s (or another program’s) workforce.
Over the past three years, the Summer Internship Program has placed 12 students hailing from throughout the southeastern region at partner sites in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Partner sites have included mosquito/vector control units, universities, and state departments of health. We have succeeded in helping four interns join the public health workforce in Florida and Texas immediately after their internships. Additionally, several interns have shifted their education towards graduate-level medical entomology or public health following the internships. At least three research publications were produced as a result of the internship program and more are in preparation.

Hi everyone, based on our call this AM I made some edits for your consideration. The document is down to two pages.
In III. (3) we are asking that CDC continues supporting CoE fellowship programs. Should we also ask CDC to continue to fund state public health entomology positions as resources allow so we are getting funding streams from both states and the feds? It sounded like at the end of the call Ben expressed that the highest impact on the field would be to obtain funding for positions (which is really what the brief is hoping to encourage).
Also, I'm assuming CoE fellowship programs = internship programs like Rhoel describes above or the Dodd short course training fellowships rather than CSTE or APHL-style fellowship programs where folks come out of graduate school to spend a year or two at state HDs or CDC, correct?

Thanks Carl,
I'm happy to tackle this next. I can also upload more info about training programs from the CoEs. I uploaded a 1 pager that we used in DC, but have more with additional details.
