SER Age groups

Hi all,

In the subgroup calls this week we discussed using visuals by age and sex at birth to describe the burden of each topic. Which age groups would be most helpful and/or which ones are you already using in your reporting? 

We can discuss this here and then decide what would work best on our next calls.

Here are some of my thoughts since our call last week...

Potentially, rename as: Special Emphasis Report: Unintentional Motor Vehicle Traffic Injuries. The frequency of other intents (suicide/homicide) are so small comparatively that it may be best to focus the report only on unintentional injuries? How do others feel about this?

Burden and Overview (all MVT)
Figure x) Injury pyramid
2015 example: 
Deaths 370
Hospitalizations 3,400
ED visits 73,400
OR a ratio:
For every 
1 death=
9 hospitalizations, and
198 ED visits

Figure x) pie charts with % of person injured (occupant, motorcyclist, pedestrian, pedal cyclist, other/unk

Focus on MVT--Occupant injuries
MVT—occupant only – one year or trends (?); age-adjusted rates; etc. To minimize graphs, we might want to limit any trends to one data source – Deaths? Hospitalizations?

Figure x) age/gender groups (0-14, 15-24, 25-44, 45-64, 65+)
Since the focus is on MVT, we might want to include both 15-19 and 20-24 year olds (in addition to the other age groups) since I think they have highest rates. Ideally, I think we'd look at 15-17 but I think it's easier to age-adjust using the 5 year increments. What do others think?

Figure x) race/ethnicity (probably don't need a trend for this; maybe just use most recent year?)

Survey/other data sources:
  • Data on impaired driving (FARS)
  • Seat belt use, and driving after drinking
It looks like all States can use 2018 BRFSS results, as both seat belt use and alcohol use while driving are included in the Core

For suicide, in WA, We often use 10-17, 18-24, 25-34, 35-54, 55-64, 65+ , or 10-17, 18-24, 25-64, 65+

Unintentional MVT Special Emphasis Report AGE GROUPS
I think there are two separate things to consider with age groups
  1. Presenting results by age-group in a visual or table (here we would be using counts or age-specific rates)
    • Probably want to use fewer groups so that tables/visuals are easier to read/interpret
    • Here it makes sense to highlight the at-risk population so I agree with Beth Hume Beth  to separate out the 15-19 and 20-24 age groups
  2. Calculating age-adjusted rates 
    • Could use different age groups for nage-adjustment than those we use for the visuals
    • For age adjustment I use 13 age groups, see below:
These are the 13 age groups we used for age-adjustment when we were working on the injury indicators project with CSTE: 
0=1
1-4=2
5-9=3
10-14=4
15-19=5
20-24=6
25-34=7
35-44=8
45-54=9
55-64=10
65-74=11
75-84=12
85-high=13

Injury pyramid for burden & overview- nice representation.

MVT occupant injuries: what about limiting to ed visits?

Age groups: yes to (0-14, 15-24, 25-44, 45-64, 65+) and breaking down to 15-19 and 20-24 would be very helpful for visuals. Agree with consistency for CSTE 13 age groups for age adjustment.

Seatbelt use is also on FARS: observed seatbelt use by state, unrestrained fatalities, 

-       Add a blurb if state is primary seatbelt law state or not.

Alcohol use- alcohol impaired driving fatalities (FARS), risky behaviors driving after drinking ( BRFSS), drove when they had been drinking (YRBS) and rode w/driver who had been drinking (YRBS). YRBS also has texting and marijuana driving questions too.
