
- American Community Survey (ACS): An annual survey performed by the US Census Bureau of the characteristics of American households. Available at the county and census tract levels.
- Composite Index Score (CIS): Methodological approach that incorporates quantitative information for multiple factors in order to provide an overall estimate of risk (or protection).
- CDC WONDER: CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) is a public resource application that makes many health-related datasets available, such as mortality data.
- GRASP: The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Geospatial Research, Analysis and Services Program at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Hepatitis C Virus (HCV): A virus that is spread by contact with contaminated blood, for example from sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs. The virus attacks the liver and leads to inflammation.
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): A virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a persons with HIV, most commonly during unprotected sex or through sharing injection drug equipment. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS.
- NCHHSTP: The National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Poisson Regression: A statistical modeling technique for count data and rates.
- Negative Binomial Regression: A statistical modeling technique for count data and rates, with an additional term to model large variance.
- Newborn Abstinence Syndrome (NAS): A group of problems that occur in a newborn who was exposed to addictive opiate drugs while in utero.
- SAMHSA: The US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency.
- SSP: Syringe services programs are community-based prevention programs that can provide a range of services, including linkage to substance use disorder treatment; access to and disposal of sterile syringes and injection equipment; and vaccination, testing, and linkage to care and treatment for infectious diseases. Also referred to as needle exchange programs and syringe exchange programs.

- Social Vulnerability Index (SVI): ATSDR’s GRASP created databases to help emergency response planners and public health officials identify and map communities that will most likely need support before, during and after a hazardous event. The SVI presents information at the census track level on fifteen social factors and groups them into four related themes.
