Reflecting on our "conference meet-up", I recall thoroughly enjoying your appreciative perspectives on the socio-technical strengthens of the SyS community--strengthens that were well affirmed over the Zoom Chat and in PollEV.

It was a brilliant Keynote reminder that this community's rich culture of innovation and creativity offers a lot to public health data modernization.

"What have we built for SyS that must be leveraged to modernize public health data systems nationwide?"

"It’s the established distributed data exchange supported by a similarly distributed community of practitioners that must be built upon as we consider what modernization means for SyS," as Karl said.

And, as Sherri noted, "SyS has proven that following medically-attended trends without individual case reports is sufficient for many conditions and useful for events that are not reportable by law. " Furthermore, "The relationships established between the contributing providers, primarily hospitals, and the STLTs are integral for improving and understanding the data better."

After all, as @Janet says, "…'Are modernized' implies an ‘end state’ – this question to me is more of an evolution and the ability for public health to stay current – current with our technologies, data visualizations and approaches, a steady state of equilibrium where we can be viewed ‘as the pulse of the population’."

Keeping a finger on the "pulse of populations" is a metaphor that rings true in so many ways.
