Webinar 2 - Input Needed

Good Afternoon All... Happy Friday!

The topic for Webinar 2 will be Public Health Data Management. The proposed learning objectives for the webinar are listed below:

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

Define data management
Discuss the essential concepts of data management
Define the data management framework
Discuss data governance and its relationship to data management
Describe data warehousing tools and techniques

Here's where you come in... I would like to customize the training and wanted to know the following:

How do you currently use these (data management) skills
What else would you like to be able to do with regards to data management

Please reply to this thread with any input regarding the webinar objectives as well as the questions above.

Here are my responses, my apologies if I am missing the boat here...
* How do you currently use these (data management) skills?

* Currently I work within an infrastructure that was already in place with data being stored and managed in several different systems. However, demands on reporting information from varied systems and a move towards data visualization have led us to explore ways to break down the data "silos".
* What else would you like to be able to do with regards to data management

* Information on benefits/challenges associated with trying to integrate systems and how to overcome the challenges. For example: Can collaboration lead to decreased specificity within the system thus limiting functionality for all who are integrating?

Describe data warehousing tools and techniques:

I would like to know at least in terms of Public health departments what if at all is the rate of usage for Dashboarding tools in the department. If yes what is the utility and if no ( is their a desire and just a lack of funds, knowledge, staff, or just no interest).

Understanding and knowing how to use built-in forms and reports in a in data management and registration system to meet the needs of programs I support.

What else would you like to be able to do with regards to data management

Explore creative approaches to using data to engage external trading partners. Understanding the benefits and limitations of various types of databases.

1. How do you currently use these (data management) skills?

In the data warehouse we are building, we utilize a hybrid of Kimball and Inman philosophy to create an enterprise level data warehouse instead of data marts. This utilizes constellation schemas to standardize dimensions across all facts instead of having multiple versions of the same dimension.

2. What else would you like to be able to do with regards to data management?

I'd like to build a better data governance model to streamline access as well as reduce security concerns.

How do you currently use these (data management) skills?

Currently, our data management skills are being applied to fill the gaps of our disease surveillance system, primarily using Microsoft Access. We also use these skills to explore novel data sources to improve data quality and completeness.

What else would you like to be able to do with regards to data management?

We (Team California) agree with Nereida's comments regarding wanting to address the issue of data being housed in various silos. We also want to be able to leverage our skills to make data management more user friendly to staff who are not data savvy.

How do you currently use these (data management) skills?
1. We currently utilize Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, And Microsoft Access as our data tiers. Microsoft SQL Server is our primary data tier which currently serves our Maven instances. The Access data tiers are in the process of being converted to .NET/c# web application frameworks using Microsoft SQL Server instances, Visual Studio IDE, and the Telerik Kendo UI Toolset. Oracle is being used by our LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
What else would you like to be able to do with regards to data management?
1. We are very interested in building a data warehouse as a platform to serve both surveillance and data analysis needs.

Thank you for all of the great responses to my questions for Webinar 2. I wanted to respond and give you a preview of how Webinar 2 will answer some of these requests.

We will talk about breaking down data silos during the webinar and I will also ask you guys to share your experiences in this area. If anyone has an example please bring it to the webinar... I may call on a few of you to give a 2-minute overview of how you accomplished breaking down that silo.
On the webinar I will discuss data governance and how to think about creating DG by using a logic model and cause and effect.
I have invited Anthony from Tennessee to share about their data warehousing efforts

This webinar will have many opportunities for the participants to weigh-in on the topics of data management, data governance, and data warehousing. We will be much more interactive than on the first webinar.

Also, I am creating a reference document with links to information and other trainings on these topics.
