AZ BioSense Community of Practice

The mission of the Arizona BioSense Workgroup is to work collaboratively as partners to build capacity and quality of BioSense syndromic surveillance in Arizona. Our vision is to improve population health and emergency response through the use of timely and effective syndromic surveillance. This space is a platform for our members to continue discussions and share cross-role topics and questions from providing the data to using syndromic data (clinician/IT/public health).

We've been using it to monitor the strain on our healthcare system from CLI. We've also used some of the aggregate data to show trends to policy makers.

Your comment is something that ties into the discussion Mark, from Pima County, and I had recently that also was about using ESSENCE to understand the burden to their healthcare facilities.  There were some great questions that I am working on how to set up queries for this.  One question is, if your county has facilities that rural communities use your facilities for healthcare, how might you be able to look in ESSENCE to see the burden or strain on your facilities.  This is where exploring the patient zip code field for visits after pulling a line list, may be of interest.  Using Facility Location as your data source to pull the query.  It also may of interest if you know your patients are from a rural community and may seek treatment in a nearby county that has a higher level of care.   You may want to set the query up with Patient Location as your data source, and review the Facility Name and Facility Zip Code.

Yong has also suggested if this is something of interest for our users, he has built the COVID-19 snapshot line list that is available in MEDSIS Resources, to pull both Facility Location and Patient Location.  We would love to hear how any of these ideas may help a user trying to answer one of these questions.

Thanks for all that info Krystal. I’ve never thought about using zip codes for situational awareness of CLI. That’s an awesome idea that I will definitely explore it more. As far as the MEDSIS resources, I don’t usually pull that data. I haven’t thought of a use for it in the past but taking into account patient location it may be more useful to me now.
