AZ BioSense Community of Practice

The mission of the Arizona BioSense Workgroup is to work collaboratively as partners to build capacity and quality of BioSense syndromic surveillance in Arizona. Our vision is to improve population health and emergency response through the use of timely and effective syndromic surveillance. This space is a platform for our members to continue discussions and share cross-role topics and questions from providing the data to using syndromic data (clinician/IT/public health).

  • Training for new users and demos of ESSENCE
  • Setting up myESSENCE dashboards for users for HRI
  • Working with users who validated the wildfire syndromes and NSSP to incorporate so that they can be turned into CCDD categories.
  • Working with ADHS Climate & Health/Drinking Water/Environmental Public Health Tracking Program, NSSP, JHU, NOAA to improve completeness of weather station data, especially during heat season.

We are using syndromic surveillance data to monitor methanol poisonings related to hand sanitizers in the state as well as fulfilling a data request from the National Weather Service Phoenix office to inform them on the heat-related illness ED visits for the 2020 heat season.

We've been using it to monitor the strain on our healthcare system from CLI. We've also used some of the aggregate data to show trends to policy makers.

  1. Distributed Fentanyl health alert to community providers and media following. Included messaging regarding high risk situations which included- "Drug use following a period of abstinence or depleted tolerance, particularly in close proximity to release from hospital, jail, prison, or treatment program." This statement as a local risk factor is supported by ongoing surveillance and matching overdose decedents with hospital/ED records to display the strong correlation with fatal ODs and recent discharge. 
  2. Hospital data was also used in our annual 2019 OD report that will be distributed this week. Specifically the reports includes a graph displaying that 73% of the decedents in 2019 had previous hospitalizations. 
  3. We are also working on use of SyS to track LOS for COVID patients while at ED and Hosp to determine true utilization and strain on facility, as number of admits/discharges per month does not reflect utilization. Need volume and duration to monitor impact of COVID patients on each facility.
