I'm looking through my data, and agree that "frozen" is in reference to frozen foods a large proportion of the time. I believe we already made the Essence query so it only includes (froze+hand) and (froze+feet)

We could get specific and pair frozen with another term like a body part but it likely would not exclude everything.

I think specifying froze with a space would definitely take care of it. Regarding the regional variation, is there any state that uses the term frozen for a cold-related illness?

For the question about regional variation, I'm not sure -- do others see this type of record? I'm wondering if it's a result of a different way of pulling the records or a difference in how it's recorded? I'll look in our records and see if we see frozen turkey records!

Interesting, thanks! I'm definitely more comfortable keeping frozen as an exclusion term, though I agree that it would be better to pair the exclusion term with common body parts like shoulder or pelvis that it shows up with. Also, would specifying"froze " with a space take care (somewhat) of the problem of picking up "frozen" records that we don't want?

Yes! That was me in Michigan about the frozen shoulder. I was going to add that these "Frozen" visits are not related to the weather. The visits are due to things such as frozen food, frozen ground (like fell on frozen mud), and frozen body parts like frozen shoulder, frozen pelvis, etc.

I think there's an issue with frozen turkeys in November- I've seen that before. I think rather than excluding "frozen", we should use inclusion terms like (frozen and hand) or I guess exclude (frozen and turkey). Although I think someone was saying they had a lot of "frozen shoulders" that might also need excluding? |

I am hoping to get some feedback. I looked at the term "Frozen" in Michigan ED visits. About 4-5% of Cold-Related Illness ED visits have the terms Frozen. I have created the attached document which shows frozen ED visits by month.
