CSTE LEAD 2022

Most impactful 1:1 coaching topics?

I am trying to decide what to discuss in my final coaching session and am curious what everyone's most impactful discussion(s) with the coaches were? (You don't need to share the gory details especially if it was a personnel thing, but I'm curious about the overall themes)

WHAT A WONDERFUL PROMPT! I second!
Amelia Salmanson, Viral Hepatitis Coordinator
I also have been wondering what to discuss as a wrap up! I somewhat want to ask what her perception of my strengths and weaknesses are and any advice she has, but not sure if that's appropriate. If I do so, I may also email Stephanie in advance so she has time to consider this...
Katrina Hansen
100%!!  I was thinking similar question, but I think the follow up will ask us what we think? But great idea to put it in email ahead of time.

Also, would love to hear about access to continued career coaching after the program ends. Do they have suggestions on resources to turn to, etc?
Laura Newman, Senior Epidemiologist
Thank you for this prompt! Can't wait to hear what others have to say...

Most impactful topics:

1. Do my core values align with my work and role at my health department? (led to multiple sessions talking about core values)
2. Come up with plan for having hard conversations with staff about organizational change
3. Talk through how to give feedback to staff
4. What to talk about with a mentor/how to make mentorship relationship mutually beneficial
5. How to support team with moral injury
6. How to manage feelings of being overwhelmed

My final two sessions were just talking through What is next for me?
Lisa McHugh, Assistant Bureau Director, Bureau of Epidemiology
Great question - I already wrote down the core values one that we discussed on a recent call - that will likely be my last conversation. One of my best conversations was about work loyalty and boundaries.
Chloe Manchester, Epidemiologist
One of the things I want to talk about is my leadership "style". I sometimes feel insecure about my approach to leadership so I want to chat through how to overcome this and whether I need to taper my approach at all. I worry I am too blunt and transparent and that I don't always toe the lines of authority the way I am expected to....Is this all in my head and what queues should I be looking for?
Katrina Hansen
That is a great suggestion!  To build off of that, when to adapt your style vs not and stay true to yourself? We all grow and change, but at what point do we not adapt because it moves away from our values?

I was also thinking of a topic around, 'how to let go'...one of my biggest challenges is being able to move on after I make a decision, not feel so guilty after a mistake, etc.  I am very harsh critic of myself and would love some tools to reframe my thinking so I can feel confident and 'at peace' with how something went, even if it didn't go well.
Roza Tammer, Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Reporting Epidemiologist at Oregon
This is a great topic! Chloe I can definitely relate to some of the same concerns you have... I discussed during coaching this year and definitely had a helpful conversation about it. I'd be happy to share what she told me sometime if you want to connect! In my experience I have had to do a lot of adapting to different work environments and some of them have been more and less accepting of my own natural communication style which tends to be pretty direct.

On the topic of managing overwhelm something I found helpful (but haven't yet really implemented) was a conversation I had about time management and coping with onslaught of emails - Stephanie had some good suggestions about how to protect time.

I love the idea of asking them for a wrap up/what suggestions they have for me moving forward.
Kathryn Lowerre, Section Head, Overdose Prevention
These are great, thanks everyone for sharing. Especially appreciate Katrina's post since I started my last monthly coaching call with "Well, I think I am going to need to cut myself some slack..." Like others, I am also looking to make my last session a good one (less venting, less survival mode, more constructive). My first call was about how to have a difficult conversation with the person who used to hold the job I hold now. What a difference not-quite-a-year makes...

Jessica Arrazola, Director of Educational Strategy at CSTE Jessica Sarah Auer, Program Analyst at CSTE Sarah Megan Wigginton, Program Associate at CSTE Megan : I am realizing that I may not have gotten as much out of the individual coaching sessions as I could have b/c I wasn't very familiar with professional coaching and what I could/should ask. Perhaps you could share some of these ideas with the next cohort for anyone who may be new to coaching?
Nicole Stone, Senor Enteric Epidemiologist
I am kicking myself for not having these conversations earlier! I have really enjoyed the 1:1 coaching, but there are some awesome topic suggestions here! I am also curious about continued coaching and what that might look like or what resources are out there.
Laura Fox, Environmental Public Health Tracking Epidemiologist
There are some great topics here and thanks all for sharing everyone! I read through a lot of these topics last week as I had my last coaching session. At the beginning of this program I didn't really have a grasp on what coaching was and would just talk about a current challenge. My most meaningful was, surprise, this month when we talked about how to be a good mentor and establishing a new mentorship relationship (Thanks Laura Newman, Senior Epidemiologist Laura for the topic). Second runner up was navigating short term career goals and career advancement.
