For historical context, CSTE and ASTHO both provided amicus curiae briefs in the legal trials of involuntary manslaughter and other charges against Michigan health officials, Dr. Eden Wells and Mr. Nick Lyons.
Recently, ASTHO decided to produce and post this statement, and they asked CSTE to do so also. After debate and review by the CSTE Executive Board (EB), the EB agreed to fulfilling ASTHO's request. The Board members feel badly about what happened in Michigan and do not want this to happen to other health officials, including State Epidemiologists and frontline epidemiologists, who make such decisions regarding public notification every day as part of their job whether it’s about Legionnaires’ disease or any other health threat.
Melissa Jordan (the Environmental Health/Occupational Health/Injury Steering Committee Chair on the CSTE Executive Board) will be joining the December 20th WG call to provide a brief update on this statement.
