Could someone explain (at a high level) how the new Simple Report & Report Stream work and if it is required for BP5?

In PA we are still onboarding Report Stream just as we would with any other lab. We are having some of the same construct and content issues with this process as any other effort, which is a bit frustrating. And it is required for BP5 but I would guess you could get away with saying that you will evaluate the practical potential of considering to examine the options of possibly onboarding them. You know, ‘grant speak’ without signing away your first born and personally identifiable genetic code.

Simple Report is a solution created by USDS during the pandemic to support the manual data entry of data needed for ELR by non-traditional reporters (think schools, nursing homes, universities, others). The reporter enters the data into a web form and then Simple Report converts it to HL7 and routes it to the appropriate health department. I think (though am not sure if fully tested/evaluated and being used in production) it can also accept bulk upload of data and create HL7 messages from those uploaded records. They are trying to expand it to other conditions besides COVID-19 I believe.

Report Stream is a platform for data exchange, kind of similar to AIMS, and the idea would be that multiple types of data can go across it, including currently home testing data.  Hope that is helpful. Hi Angela,
I put in a milestone to nod to ReportStream in BP5, but I did speak directly with CDC about it. Right now, CT has had no request or use case for using ReportStream. Strictly speaking from my state role, I am a bit concerned that it is being 'sold' as a 'rapid response' alternative which means another endpoint for us. I would like to know why AIMS couldn't do the same thing. But it was funded so now we have to at least nod to it, like Mark said.

Re: Simple Report - we did not use it. But I remind folks that the bulk of our lab reporting pandemic response was done with 3 staff (myself, another epi-informatician, and our sole IT person). We had less than zero bandwidth to consider using it. Again, another end point, and may not be useful for us. We managed to collect from non-traditional reporters without it.

With the official end of the pandemic coming soon, it will be interesting to see how states continue to collect SARS-CoV-2 labs and COVID-19 cases. From what I've seen already, it will be every state deciding for themselves what they want to sustain or support. That actually would be some good survey questions on a call.....

  • I would encourage folks that are interested to checkout the training videos on Simple Report. They can also be found on the site by clicking How It Works > Training Videos at the top.
  • Annie mentioned the bulk upload option. I can confirm that is currently in production and actively used!

Also, I'm currently an engineer working on ReportStream but formally the interoperability lead at the Louisiana DOH. I have plenty of sympathy for your all's position having been in it not too long ago and am happy to answer any specific questions. Alternatively, I'm sure a member of our team(maybe me!) would be willing to present on these systems at a future workgroup call.
