Hello Meredith,

I would like to know if we can add the following discussion item to the agenda for the next meeting: “Use of multiple races for a given patient in the HL7 ELR standard”.

We (SD) have noticed that for a given patient’s ELR record, we could have multiple races reported for one ELR. This practice makes it difficult to perform effective EPI analysis on the data. I noticed that the syndromic surveillance HL7 ADT standard only allows for one race to be populated; the ELR standard allows for multiple races. I would like to hear from other jurisdictions how they are handling or plan to handle the multiple race issue, specifically for EPI analysis. In my opinion, the best way to address this issue is to modify the standard so that only one (primary) race is allowed in the ELR standard.

Hi Michele, good topic. However, I have to disagree with changing that in the ELR standard, that should be a state decision. The ELR standard should (and does I believe) follow national criteria for race collection set by the US Census and multi-racial identification is important for surveillance and public health follow up. We do multi-race analysis here. That is just my $0.19. I'll be curious what others say.
