CSTE Public Health and Health Care Analytics

March Call

Join us Thursday, March 14 at 1pm EST to hear from Dennis McDermot, PhD, a Senior Forecast Analyst with Division of Forecasting and Research at the Washington State Office of Financial Management on "Total Cost of Care and Resource Use: Variation in cost and utilization in Washington State".

Total Cost of Care (TCOC) measures full-population health care affordability in terms of utilization and price, accounting for 100% of care provided to patients. HealthPartners (www.healthpartners.com/tcoc) provides a TCOC toolkit based on their Total Care Relative Resource Values (TCRRVTM). TCOC-TCRRV measures are risk-adjusted based on age, sex, and health status to allow fair comparisons across systems or among sub-groups within a system. In Washington State, 2017, the Total Cost Index varied by legislative district from 20 percent below the state average to 25 percent above.

After the webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Identify sources for TCOC and risk adjustment SAS code
  • Identify data elements required for analysis
  • Describe structure of code, available options, procedure for implementation
  • Interpret TCOC results
  • Discuss potential uses, strengths and limitations
