About the presentation:
Routine surveillance of chronic diseases linked to environmental exposures are often untimely, posing a significant challenge for rapid public health action. The primary data sets used in the surveillance of these outcomes are obtained from hospitalization and emergency department discharge data extracts. These data are often only refreshed and submitted to state health departments annually, resulting in a retrospective environmental epidemiology review. However, in response to recent environmental events such as the Flint Water Crises, as well as advancements in near-real-time data collection and reporting, a renewed focus has been placed on monitoring surveillance data streams prospectively, and at regular time intervals (e.g., monthly).
During this presentation, Kevin will discuss efforts within in the Colorado Tracking program to develop a more timely spatial and temporal disease surveillance process. Specifically, he will provide a practical overview of Hierarchical Bayesian disease mapping techniques and will demonstrate the application of these techniques for monitoring asthma emergency department visits. Lastly, he will review how these complex models create useful and straightforward outputs that can be used to monitor surveillance data streams on a monthly basis for county and sub-county areas in Colorado, as well as identify unusual spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal patterns.

Kevin Berg is a spatial epidemiologist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, where he leads statistical and GIS support of the Environmental Public Health Tracking and Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention programs. His primary work with the Colorado Tracking program involves analyzing spatial and temporal trends in exposure to environmental hazards and related health outcomes. He holds two degrees in Geography and Geographic Information Science, including a master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa.
