Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) cause at least 2 million infections and 23,000 deaths each year in the United States. Movement of patients between healthcare facilities is a likely means of MDRO transmission. Since 2016, the Tennessee Department of Health has been working to visualize the patient sharing network among hospitals to improve outbreak containment. The geographical pattern of TN patient sharing network has not been analyzed, although network graph suggested geographical clustering and focal points in Nashville.

About our speaker:
Rany Octaria is a Ph.D. student in epidemiology at Vanderbilt University. She received her medical degree from the University of Indonesia. After practicing medicine in Indonesia, she received a Fulbright scholarship to complete her Master of Public Health from Vanderbilt University. She worked as an epidemiologist for the Tennessee Department of Health’s Healthcare-Associated Infections program since 2016. Her doctoral research is on the role of patient sharing network in the transmission of antimicrobial-resistant organisms.
