As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has evolved, so too have the data streams, modeling approaches, and basic questions that have guided our understanding of its spread. Early in the pandemic, the most pressing needs were to specify the magnitude of the problem and to strategize swift, large-scale responses. More recently, attention has shifted to mapping the progress of the epidemic within particular communities. Mr. Kissler's presentation will discuss approaches that his group has taken to address both of these problems and place their efforts in the context of the overall scientific response to the pandemic.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Articulate the appropriateness of different modeling paradigms (agent-based, ODE, phenomenological models) and their roles in generating COVID-19 pandemic projections.
- Weigh the relative merits of various COVID-19 data sources (clinical tests counts, percent positive tests, hospital admissions, mortality, serology data) and understand the challenges that arise when making inferences from them.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:
Stephen Kissler is a postdoctoral fellow in immunology and infectious diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He develops mathematical models of infectious disease transmission, with an emphasis on pandemic influenza and antibiotic resistant pathogens. Since January 2020 he has been developing projections of the COVID-19 pandemic and studying geographic and demographic disparities in its impact.
