Our speakers will introduce a new tool that has been developed collaboratively with CDC, local and state health departments and their research group- the Rate Stabilizing Tool (RST). We will consider and discuss the following points:
- Why map chronic disease burden?
- Why smooth?
- What the RST does and why it is useful…?
The webinar will include a lecture and hands-on activities.
If you plan to follow along with the hands-on exercise, please have the entire course folder downloaded and unzipped onto your local machine. All course materials are available here: https://rice.box.com/v/RSTcsteTrainingContent
You will also need either ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro installed and activated with a license.
While the demonstration will be performed in ArcGIS Pro, follow-along instructions will be provided for both ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro.
If you do not currently have a license for the software, you can sign up for a free 21-day trial of ArcGIS Pro at https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-pro/trial.
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Introduce the Rate Stabilizing Tool (RST)
- Gain experience installing the tool and managing the user interface
- Develop an understanding of the required data inputs
- Interpret and map the output.
About our speakers:
Joshua Tootoo serves as the Director of Training and Geospatial Sciences for the Children’s Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI). He has led a series of projects seeking to understand the complex social and environmental factors that contribute to racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes, and direct CEHI’s GIS capacity building efforts. His research interests include: the application of administrative datasets into analyses examining environmentally driven health disparities; informal project based approaches to education and training for public health/environmental professionals; and the communication of complex data analyses and explanatory narratives to the public, and policy makers through visualization

Ruiyang Li is a GIS analyst at CEHI, and a certified Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP). He graduated as a Master student from School of Natural Resources & Environment, University of Michigan in 2014. He is interested in the application of spatial analysis in public health at CEHI. He is excited to be a part of CEHI team; and wants to contribute in improving the health quality of various communities.
