The Virginia Department of Health, Office of Health Equity team will provide an in-depth presentation highlighting how they developed the HOI, an online mapping tool of community health influences that allows advocates, citizens and providers to view the many factors that affect health across their state. The Health Opportunity Index (HOI) is a composite measure of the social, economic, educational, demographic and environmental factors that relate to a community’s well-being. The HOI provides a baseline for a community to judge what types of decisions would support positive health outcomes. This tool can help public health practitioners isolate social determinant of health indicators to determine which specific factors are contributing to poor health outcomes and tailor interventions addressing those specific determinants and population health needs.
ASTHO, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will host this training opportunity for public health professionals (e.g. informaticians, epidemiologists, minority health/health equity professionals, Senior Deputies, etc.) interested in learning more about data tools to advance health equity.
