The pandemic has provided a rare reset, where through incredible loss and grief, we can imagine a new normal – a better, brighter, bolder normal – that is built upon the principles of equity and community.
For the Public Health Learning Network<https://nnphi.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=239198fe40d064f8b332c8c13&id=c9506b898e&e=5046a71b67> and the National Coordinating Center for Public Health Training<https://nnphi.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=239198fe40d064f8b332c8c13&id=8488e6fc12&e=5046a71b67,> this looks like building a stronger foundation for the field through investment and training, expanding and activating the public health workforce to be more reflective of the communities they serve. It looks like growing our network to reach rural, Tribal, and territorial regions and deploying new workforce development models to build capacity among public health practitioners. And it looks like leveraging technology alongside good old fashioned connections and relationships to forge a new future with equity at the center.
We have no choice but to imagine this new normal and to push our systems, institutions, and leaders toward a progress that prioritizes health and wellbeing for all. As I lean into my new role as Director of the National Coordinating Center for Public Health Training, I imagine a new normal where we take bold steps to develop and sustain a more innovative, competent, and diverse transdisciplinary workforce. As the pandemic bore down on the nation, health departments across the country grappled with an exponential demand for public health services like COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, and other emergency response activities. Some health departments, like the Fairfax County Health Department in Northern Virginia, drew on local public health organizations, including the Institute for Public Health Innovation (IPHI)<https://nnphi.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=239198fe40d064f8b332c8c13&id=c6955806f9&e=5046a71b67> to hire and train contact tracers and other public health workers.

In March 2020, as the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, local and tribal health departments across the nation braced for the hard decisions and immense workload ahead. Montana health departments were no different. The Montana Public Health Institute (MTPHI)<https://nnphi.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=239198fe40d064f8b332c8c13&id=5a2337f262&e=5046a71b67> launched in April 2020, a timeline that was accelerated by the pandemic.
