Human Rabies Logic Set Question
Hi all,
I was going over the Rabies (Human) RCKMS Logic. Have any PHAs implemented this condition and was there a concern that the Med logic column would trigger an eICR for people that would be coming in for rabies PEP after an animal bite encounter? Are other PHAs keeping this logic set enabled?
For reference the MED default logic set are Rabies immune globulin administered and Rabies vaccine administered as the two necessary criteria
Thanks in advance for any input

Hi Darren- In Colorado our Zoonotic SME had me delete these two criteria for this very reason. We were both thinking along the same lines as you are that it could get messy with animal bites triggering. I hope this helps.
Our zoonotic team has not reviewed this specification yet. But yes, since the beginning of the year we have received almost 100 eICR for people both receiving rabies prophylaxis, as well as a history of having received prophylaxis.
In Florida, our SMEs had the same concern so we removed the MED logic criteria. Occasionally, with this logic removed, we will see eICRs for patients receiving prophylaxis, or history of prophylaxis. In these instances the provider is using a rabies diagnosis code in the problems list or history of present illness, causing it to be sent. This isn't great for us, so we have actually reached out to some of these health care organizations to ask that they use a more appropriate ICD-10 code when treating patients with rabies PEP.
Thanks you three, this helps a lot, I really appreciate it!
