A Fond Farewell
CSTE congratulates longtime Executive Director Jeff Engel,
MD on his retirement after nearly eight years of successful
leadership of the organization. Dr. Engel left his directorial role
in early 2020, but graciously served as CSTE’s Senior Advisor to
the COVID-19 Response for an additional 16 months, assisting
new Executive Director Janet Hamilton, MPH.

Jeff’s tenure began in 2012. Under his leadership, CSTE
worked with partners CDC, ASTHO, APHL, and NACCHO to
battle major public health crises, such as Ebola (2014), Zika
         (2015–16), EVALI (2019), and now COVID-19 (2020–21). CSTE
also experienced significant increases in membership size,
National Office staff, project expansion, and budget growth. In
recent years, CSTE moved to a new office complex in Century
Center near several CDC offices, the CSTE Foundation was
launched, and CSTE experienced record attendance at Annual
Conferences in Boise, West Palm Beach, and Raleigh. Prior to
joining CSTE, Jeff was the State Health Official (2009–2012)
and State Epidemiologist (2002–2009) in North Carolina and
served on the CSTE Executive Board (2008–2009).

We’d like to commend and thank Dr. Engel for the growth and
success CSTE has achieved under his steady, expert leadership.
We are grateful for his achievements and confident he has
placed CSTE on solid footing as he transitions to retirement.
Once Jeff fully retires after the 2021 Annual Conference, he
plans to spend more time in Raleigh, NC with his wife Susan
(pictured right), travel to visit his children and grandchildren,
play guitar, garden, and practice yoga. We wish him all the best
in his retirement. Good luck Jeff!

                                                                                  Jeff and Susan
