Census Tract Mapping Methods: Visually Balanced Cartograms and the Urban Census Tract Invisibility Problem in Washington State - Christopher Ahmed, Washington State Department of Heallth
A visually balanced cartogram distorts geographic boundaries enlarging the smallest geographies to a size that a viewer can see. Using this method, Mr. Ahmed created a visually balanced Washington State census tract map and evaluated how well this method addressed the urban census tract invisibility problem – a problem where population dense census tracts in urban areas become invisible to a viewer when a map is presented at a large spatial scale such as a state map. Before applying this method 59.8% of Washington census tracts were below the minimum size for visibility. After applying this method only 1.1% of census tracts remained invisible.

Ms. Lovgren presents a short overview of a new online data tool developed by Clark County Public Health’s Health Assessment and Evaluation team called the Healthier Clark County InfoMap. This tool utilizes ESRI’s Story Maps platform to give users a more interactive way of exploring health assessment data
Comparing City and County Health and Social Determinants of Health Data with the City Health Dashboard - Dr. Benjamin Spoer, Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health
In this presentation Dr. Spoer and his team evaluated whether using county-level data to characterize public health measures in cities biases the characterization of city populations. We compared four public health and socio-demographic measures in 447 U.S. cities (percent children living in poverty, percent non-Hispanic Black, age-adjusted cardiovascular disease mortality, life expectancy at birth) to the same measures calculated for counties containing those cities. We found substantial and highly variable city-county differences within and across metrics. This suggests use of county data to proxy city measures could hamper accurate allocation of public health resources and appreciation of the urgency of public health needs in specific locales.
