Policy Accomplishments
• Submitted comments on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Notice of Proposed Rulemaking: Public Health and
Clinical Data Exchange Objectives.
• Hosted a four-part webinar series with American Medical Informatics Association and Pew Charitable Trusts on modernizing
public health data exchange, focused on policy solutions to improve electronic case reporting, electronic laboratory reporting,
syndromic surveillance, and immunization information systems.
• Secured $50 million in appropriations for CDC’s DMI through the FY 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act.
• Secured $500 million in appropriations for CDC’s DMI and Center for Epidemic Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics through
the American Rescue Plan Act.
• Testified at a U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology hearing titled, “Data for Decision-Making: Responsible
Management of Data During COVID-19 and Beyond.”
• Hosted a briefing for congressional staff titled, “A Roadmap to 21st Century Data Modernization.”
• Testified at a U.S. House Committee on Appropriations hearing titled, “Ready or Not: U.S. Public Health Infrastructure.”
• Held more than 50 meetings with key congressional staff to advocate for public health data modernization and other
legislative action to support our nation’s public health system.
• Joined our DEH partners in several critical communications to Congress, including:
» a letter to the U.S. House and Senate Appropriations Committees signed by more than 100 organizations in support
of at least $250 million in funding for DMI in FY 2022. This was a record number of organizations to support DMI in
Congress.
» a letter to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee requesting they match the House-passed level of funding and
provide a minimum of $150 million for DMI in FY 2022.
» a letter to Congressional leadership in support of $500 million in funding for DMI in the Build Back Better Act.
